SHOWBIZ PRESSURE ALMOST SENT SINGER BARBARA 'OFF THE RAILS'

SINGER and actress Barbara Dickson has revealed her West End career sent her “off the rails” and she became ill due to the pressure of seeing her name in lights.

The double Olivier award-winning Scot also said she nearly turned her back on showbusiness after her 1985 hit I Know Him So Well because she did not want to have to “dance like Tina Turner”.

In a new documentary for Gaelic channel BBC Alba, the Dunfermline-born star recalls how she went from the folk clubs of Fife to become one of Britain’s most successful female artists.

After establishing herself as a singer, her stage career took off in 1983 with her first acting role in the long-running Willy Russell musical Blood Brothers.

However, the 65-year-old – who went on to appear on TV in Band of Gold and in the musical Spend, Spend, Spend – revealed it had taken a serious toll on her health.
