LINK: CAN’T CAGE THIS ANIMAL: AN INTERVIEW WITH ERIC BURDON

Late Night With Jimmy Fallon - Season 4
His white hair spiked and his glasses framed with rainbow-coloured rims, Animals front man Eric Burdon still looks every bit the rocker he was when he helped lead the “British Invasion” alongside bands like the Beatles, The Who and the Rolling Stones in the 1960s. Though the original version of The Animals broke up by 1968, Burdon’s distinctly aggressive, raw vocals on hits such as “House of the Rising Sun” and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” helped land the band in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Still writing and touring, Burdon, now 71 and living in southern California, pulls no punches when talking music, aging or his candid reactions to the untimely passing of friends like Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin. With a new album, ‘Til Your River Runs Dry, in stores, a show to play tonight at Casino Rama and a third autobiography in the works, Burdon recently sat down withZoomer’s Mike Crisolago.
PART ONE: The Invasion, Drugs and the Death of Jimi Hendrix
MIKE CRISOLAGO: The British invasion proved one of the most monumental cultural shifts in modern music history. Was there competition between you and other bands like the Beatles or was everyone just happy to grab a piece of the pie?
ERIC BURDON: Well, when it started out, we were like brothers in arms. We were all friends and we’d get together and have a drink after a show. It was a real tight knit club of people. But then the big money started coming in, and the big agents and managers got their hands on the dough, and then there was a need for competition and so the camaraderie was lost by about ’67. I hated the expression British invasion. But we were young, we were from Britain and we were in America playing their music to them. That was a big thing to be able to pull off.

LINK: Chris Squire interview

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Yes bassist Chris Squire discusses, among other topics, how he feels about being snubbed by the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for another year, and comments on Rush's upcoming induction.

Q: Rush are getting inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Are you at all miffed they got it before you?

A: (Laughs) "No, I can't object to that. Logistically, it's probably difficult for whoever the committee is to bring in Yes. Rush is fairly simple. It's the same three guys and always has been. They deserve to be there, no doubt about that.

But there still seems to be a certain bias towards early-Seventies prog rock bands like Yes and King Crimson. I still think it's weird that Chicago isn't in. That to me is odd. In our case, we're on our 18th member. If we ever do get inducted, it would be only fair to have all the members, old and new. So that may be a problem for the committee. I don't know." more on this story

LINK: Atkins/May review

Think back four decades; just try it. You may recall that Al Atkins fronted Judas Priest during those ancient times and even penned one of the band’s all-time classic songs: “Victim of Changes.” Not bad, eh? Though his stint with one of Birmingham’s finest heavy metal units is more than notable achievement to include on one’s resume, it’s not the only thing Atkins has done with his musical career, which also includes the release of six solo albums and work fronting Holy Rage. A few years back Atkins was an integral part of the Atkins May Project debut album Serpent’s Kiss, which also featured the considerable talents of guitarist Paul May (hence, Atkins May). Said album was solid, meat and potatoes heavy metal with a British blues underpinning, which pretty much all the classic UK heavy metal acts have, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest included.
And that brings us to sophomore Atkins May Project album Valley of Shadows, which is no major departure from its predecessor, but is nevertheless a more cohesive, better produced (also the work of Paul May) effort. Much like the act’s name would imply it is the mid-range, rough ‘n crusty Akins vocal approach and some pretty versatile, goddamn electric riffs and leads from May that constitute the guts of the new long player. Atkins’ vocals are somewhat of acquired taste, although I happen to find his gritty approach a much-needed point of distinction, not to mention soulful in a broad sort of way.

THOM THE WORLD POET: The Daily Poem

Rob Ayling writes:

"Thom the World poet is an old mate of mine from way back in my history. Even pre-dating Voiceprint, when I was running "Otter Songs" and Tom's poetry tapes and guest appearances with Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth, Mother Gong are well known and highly regarded. It just felt right to include a daily poem from Thom on our Gonzo blog and when I approached him to do so, he replied with in seconds!!! Thom is a great talent and just wants to spread poetry, light and positive energy across the globe. If we at Gonzo can help him do that - why not? why not indeed!!" (The wondrous poetpic is by Jack McCabe, who I hope forgives me for scribbling all over it with Photoshop)

HOMELESS HAIKU

Shopping trolley man
He piles up possessions
Others throw away

Park Police all know him
Camping in the Green Belt
Gypsy in his tent

Buddha beggar stands
Hands outstretched in petition
Who can see him now?

Cold snap steals his heat
Rain soaks everything he owns
Nothing to live for

crying begins now
when income needs to be found
only friends will care
